What to pack in the hospital bag

For you, for baby, and for your support person — packed by week 36.

Most hospitals supply the basics for baby while you're there — diapers, wipes and swaddles. Your bag is really about comfort and the trip home.

For you

  • ID, insurance card and any hospital paperwork
  • A long phone charging cable
  • Loose, comfortable clothes for going home
  • Nursing bras or soft bras, and nursing pads
  • Slippers or slip-on shoes, and warm socks
  • Lip balm, hair ties and your own toiletries

For baby

  • The car seat, installed ahead of time
  • Two going-home outfits in different sizes
  • A hat and a light blanket for the ride (removed once buckled)

Buckle baby into the car seat without bulky layers; add a blanket over the harness instead.

For your support person

  • A change of clothes and a toothbrush
  • Snacks and a refillable water bottle
  • A list of people to message with the news

A short letter, once a month.
